Position: One Year—Visiting Assistant Professor of Art
Responsibilities: The Kalamazoo College Department of Art and Art History seeks a ceramist and/or sculptor with the ability to teach a wide range of courses for all levels of undergraduate students. Course load is two undergraduate courses in each of three 11-week quarters and supervision of Senior Individualized Projects (advanced level senior thesis that culminates in a solo exhibition). Teaching responsibilities are split between ceramics and sculpture. The ability to teach a casting course that incorporates slip casting and non traditional materials (no foundry) would be desirable, but is not required. Responsibilities include management and supervision of the ceramics and sculpture facilities. Candidates are expected to have a high aptitude and interest in undergraduate teaching, a commitment to the liberal arts, and a desire to involve undergraduates in scholarship both inside and outside the classroom. Participation in departmental activities and service is expected.
Qualifications: MFA in ceramics or sculpture required. University or college level teaching experience expected. Experience as a studio technician preferred. Ability to maintain the ceramics and sculpture facilities required.
Appointment Dates: September 2009—June 2010
Salary: Salary is competitive.

Department Information: There are four full-time faculty positions in the Department of Art and Art History. The department graduates between 10 and 18 majors each year. Many go on to pursue graduate degrees and careers in studio art, academia, and arts administration. The ceramics facility includes 16 electric wheels, two gas and three electric kilns, glaze and clay mixing facilities and a pugmill. The sculpture facility includes a woodshop (supervised for approximately ten hours per week by a part-time technician), mold area, mig welders and oxy acetylene set-up.
